5 Questions with Rags #33 - DOUBLE BILL w/ MARTEN HØRGER & Funkanomics!

People often say that I’m lucky, but it’s really just a matter of trying. I’ve been trying to hook this up with Marten Horger for awhile now, and as luck would have it he’s on the road in my wonderful home country of Canada and he’s touring with another favourite of mine, the appropriately and greatly monikered Funkanomics. And because they’re both apparently very rad, we got answers from both for this very special edition of the 5 Questions!

Rocking out of Germany, arguably my favourite country I've visited, both of these cats bring the funky goodness but both feed different needs in my bass diet. My nights dancing in my girlfriend’s laundry room start with the lighter, groovy Funkanomics aesthetic and when it gets late Marten Horger is there to bring that slightly more menacing Punks music aesthetic. Guy is a straight up killer. His Beats. Vol.3 Mix was one of my most played mixes of 2015 and the Funkanomics Chillax mixes rank among my most played mixes of all-time.

Go catch them on their Canadian tour if you get a chance. (I'll be in Vancouver. You can have a high-five!) The good homeys in SkiiTour are also helping them out on this. If you like dancing, this is not a show to be missed.

For your listening pleasure whilst you peruse this 5 Questions, take in the soothing sounds of Funkanomics’ “Say What U Want.” Love that flute. Daaaaaaamn.

1. Do you remember the first album you bought with your own money?
Marten Horger: Yes, it was Michael Jackson – Dangerous. It was #1 in Germany at the time. That cover was so damn good and the riff of “Black or White” was just epic.

FxFarmer aka Dan of Funkanmoics: My first album was AC/DC Flick of the Switch on Vinyl. I still own this record and I've listened to it over 1000 times!!

2. When is the last time you did something for the first time?

Horger: Well, I try to do that a lot actually. I think this is a very important thing in many aspects of life. When I make music I try to do things different every single time for example. I also looove food so I’m constantly on the hunt for that amazing new dish. Trying new things and experimenting is with new stuff is the only way to progress.

Farmer: I always try do do new things. Last time I tried to suck my little toe and it felt really good!

3. Do you think technology has the ability to set us free to a Star Trek-like utopia, with humankind standing as one?

Horger: I totally like the thought of that!

Farmer: Well I hope so. A friendly and peaceful community would be amazing!

4. Can you think of a movie that had a genuine affect on the way you saw the world?

Horger: I wish I had more time for movies… but honestly I only watch tutorials these days.

Farmer: Bambi destroyed my world view.

5. If you could spend the day with anyone living or dead, who would it be and what would you do?

Horger: I would have to say my amazing family, just hanging out.  That’s the one thing I’m not doing enough these days.

Farmer: My Grandpa, because I was raised by my Grandparents and he was a amazing and really intelligent man. I just wanna talk to him and cook some typical German dishes with him!

6. The guest question this time comes from the good homey West coast rapper Def3, who asks, simply… What is the meaning of life?

Horger: Wow…OK. So I think that there is no universal meaning to everyone’s life. You have to go out and find out what the meaning of your personal life is. It might be making other people happy, doing what you’re good and perfecting it or simply just having fun. For me it’s a combination out of all of these I guess.

Farmer: Just be a good, loyal and friendly person and work hard for your dreams!

Before you go checking out the important links below, put on this, “Deeper Down” by Marten Horger, the BEST BASS TRACK I heard in 2015.

Release date - Nov 16th 2015 - 9/10 THE MONEY SHOT - DJMag For this monumental release Marten has teamed up with the lovely Eva Lazarus to deliver a sure fire hit Deeper Down. On the B side Marten goes solo and pushes his sound into new territory with a ‘no frills’ dance floor monster Time For Some Action. 9/10 THE MONEY SHOT - DJMag “Germany’s Marten Hørger comes swaggering out of the blocks with a beefy floor-filler based around a minimal techy two-step rhythm with just the right amount of distortion, some killer percussion and liberal use of analogue-style rising bass. It’s the old trick of finding the sickest of sounds and tweaking it to high-heaven with gleeful abandon, playfully and skilfully rendered by an artist who delights in pushing the boundaries of breakbeat-fuelled bass music” 9/10 THE MONEY SHOT EVA LAZARUS Follow on Soundcloud - https://soundcloud.com/evalazarus MARTEN HØRGER: Latest News & more - www.punksmusic.com
